National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event. Each year more than 350,000 people from across the country will attend thousands of sites organised by councils, schools, businesses, communities and Toyota Dealers. This year there is also a focus on the health and wellbeing benefits that getting outside amongst trees and nature can bring to children and adults alike. “A new report, Planting Trees – Just What the Doctor Ordered, launched by Planet Ark and sponsored by Toyota shows that contact with nature helps increase academic achievement and reduce the effects of anxiety and depression in children,” says Planet Ark spokesperson Rebecca Gilling. “Participation in National Tree Day is fun and community focused,” says Gilling. “It helps address important environmental issues like the loss of habitat for native wildlife, soil salinity and erosion as well as being good for individual and community health.” National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark in partnership with Toyota and its Dealer Network, which provides on the ground support at local community tree planting sites Australia wide. This year, National Tree Day was held on July 29th. Our club comitted to attending the tree planting site and lending a hand. We got our hands and clothes dirty and planted hundreds of trees in the Heritage Forest Reserve. Well done, team!
