Today's Blog post is brought to you by our newst member Heather! Heather hails all the way from Canada and has joined us whilst she's living and working in Tassie.
Why Join Rotaract? If you’ve stumbled upon this page, chances are you’re considering joining the Rotaract Club of Tamar Valley. We’d love to have you, but if you still need a bit of convincing, here are a few reasons to join Rotaract: -Give back to the community. Rotaract, like Rotary, has a duel focus on international and community service projects and joining the club is a great way to make a positive impact on your local community as well as communities around the world. -It’s social. I’ve been a member of four Rotaract clubs and have always found it to be a great way to meet friends upon moving to a new city or onto a new stage in life. If you like to volunteer and be engaged in your community, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people! -Professional development. In addition to community and international service, Rotaract has a professional development component. We frequently invite guest speakers to our meetings to talk about their careers and sometimes take tours of local workplaces. -It’s international. When you join Rotaract, you’re not just joining a local volunteer group, but an international community. There are 8703 Rotaract clubs in 171 countries around the world (data from 2010-11 Fourth Quarter Report). In addition to international service projects, Rotaracters have the opportunity to attend international conferences or take part in trips organized by other Rotaract districts around the world. -It looks great on a resume. Rotaract is affiliated with Rotary – one of the world’s top service clubs – and having it on your resume sets you apart. With 1.2 million Rotarians around the world, chances are that person interviewing you is one of them. Employers know that Rotaracters are hardworking individuals with a passion for service and those are exactly the sort of people they want to hire. -It’s fun! Not only do we have a great time volunteering, but we also organize monthly socials such as laser tag or mini golf. If this sounds like the sort of thing you think you’d be interested in or if you’d like to find out more, please don’t hesitate to contact us. The club is always looking for new members and we would love to hear from you!

Wow! What a weekend. District 9830 in Tasmania has four Rotaract Clubs that span across the state. This past weekend, three of those clubs (Tamar Valley, Central Coast & Sandy Bay) joined together for our first 9830 joint celebration. Central Coast hosted us for an epic car rally and scavenger hunt, concluding with an 80's party and sleepover at the Payton Park camp grounds. With challenges like 'take a picture with Road Kill' and 'sing 1 minute of Karaoke at the Forth Pub,' we knew we were in for a weekend of laughs. Many of us have some very funny stories to share. Have a look at our photo gallery to see some of the things we came up with. Thanks again to Central Coast for your hospitality and the effort that went into the organisation of the weekend. The next statewide event will be hosted by yours truly and that will be on February 2nd.
This is what our club are up to this weekend! We are beyond excited! Fingers crossed a Tamar Valley team can take out the prize! Photos to come!
Hi there! Sorry for our silence. We've been a busy club these past few weeks! Here's a litte update on what's been happening. As mentioned in our last post, we were helping out at the Raising our Wings Gala Ball for the Take Flight Foundation (find the link below). The night was a huge success, with Take Flight fundraising more than $25 000 for finding a cure to Angelman's Syndrome. Well done to everyone who put the ball together, and thankyou to our members who donated their time on a Saturday night to help out. From left: Reannah, Sara, Heather, Aaron, Lisa, Aileen, Ian, Shayne, Daran & Cas. Also thanks to Katie who left before this picture was taken. On Saturday 19th of October some of our members volunteered at the Run For A Wish fun runk at Aurora Stadium. Congratulations to the Make a Wish Foundation who raised over $22 000 to grant wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. We hope to help again next year! Below: Lisa and Callum volunteering in their High-Vis Vests. Speaking of Aurora Stadium, on the 24th of October our club did something different instead of a meeting. First we met at The Oak for a good old fashioned pub meal, and then we moved on to Aurora Stadium where we led on a tour of the facilities by Cam. We learnt about the grandstands, grounds, IT equipmemt and Scoreboard. We also got to have a play in the Hawthorn club rooms! Thanks to Shayne and Lisa for organising the tour and to Cam for taking us through! Below you can see Cas having a kick of the footy in the club rooms and also our token group photo. In some other great news, we welcome Daran, the newest member of our club! And probably the best induction photo yet! And finally, we had a great time with the Rotary Club of Westbury last night, as we met at Zone 3 Laser Skirmish for some fierce competition, as well as a bit of Pizza! Three rounds were played, and the Red Team came out victorious each round! Although with a team captain like Cas, who is the most competitive person in our club, no one was surprised. So congratulations to the Red Team of 5 RCTV members and 1 RC Westbury Members who took out the trophy! We look forward to challening the RC Westbury to another challenge soon!
Our club is going to be busy in October, with a Rotabattle event this Friday (come and join us for mini golf!) and many of our members lending a hand at various charity events. Two worthy causes that we'll be assisting this month are the Take Flight: Raising Our Wings Gala Ball, as well as Run for a Wish for the Make A Wish Foundation. Raising Our Wings Gala Ball: Take Flight has been established to raise awareness and funds for Angelman Syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition affecting just 2,300 people in Australia. Angleman Syndrome is often characterised by developmental delay, severe speech impairment and an associated seizure disorder that is typically difficult to treat. Although there is no cure for Angelman Syndrome currently, recent research has delivered some amazing breakthroughs, generating much excitement among the Angelman community. More funds are needed to continue to progress research. All proceeds raised by Take Flight are provided to the Foundation of Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (FAST) Australia invest in research projects. All proceeds from the Raising our Wings Ball will go to Take Flight. We can't wait to help out on the night! If you would like to know more about Take Flight please visit www.take-flight.org. Run For A Wish: Run For A Wish is an exciting new Fun Run/Walk in Launceston, which aims to raise money for Make-A-Wish® Australia, while encouraging participation from all members of the community. Put 20th October in your diary now! For more information, or to enter, visit http://runforawish.com.au/ We've been cooking quite a few sausages lately. We've had another chance to feed shoppers at Harvey Norman with our second BBQ in two months. This money also contributed to supporting school students in The Phillipines. We also had the chance to raise funds for our club by providing lunch and snacks for around 160 primary school students at a soccer carnival. Special shout out to Nick, Ian, Callum and Hannah who worked super hard on those two days. Thanks to Heather and Hannah for providing the photos!
Saturday the 4th of August was an exciting day in our club's history. Some of our members were up at the break of dawn, preparing for this momentous occasion. To be honest, it was just a BBQ held at our local Harvey Norman store, but we were excited because it was our first day to test our very own, brand new Rotaract BBQ. We had a very busy day cooking up some sausages and hamburgers, and made a fine profit by the end of the day. Our mascot bears, Shoelace and Hero were in attendance, and we had to convince several small children that unfortunately they were not for sale! All money raised from this BBQ is contributing to our ongoing sponsorship of two young women in the Philippines, to enable them to complete high school. Our next BBQ is coming up in September - so make a note to come and buy some of best sausages in Launceston! National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event. Each year more than 350,000 people from across the country will attend thousands of sites organised by councils, schools, businesses, communities and Toyota Dealers. This year there is also a focus on the health and wellbeing benefits that getting outside amongst trees and nature can bring to children and adults alike. “A new report, Planting Trees – Just What the Doctor Ordered, launched by Planet Ark and sponsored by Toyota shows that contact with nature helps increase academic achievement and reduce the effects of anxiety and depression in children,” says Planet Ark spokesperson Rebecca Gilling. “Participation in National Tree Day is fun and community focused,” says Gilling. “It helps address important environmental issues like the loss of habitat for native wildlife, soil salinity and erosion as well as being good for individual and community health.” National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark in partnership with Toyota and its Dealer Network, which provides on the ground support at local community tree planting sites Australia wide. This year, National Tree Day was held on July 29th. Our club comitted to attending the tree planting site and lending a hand. We got our hands and clothes dirty and planted hundreds of trees in the Heritage Forest Reserve. Well done, team! The new Rotaract year has started well in regards to fun & fellowship. Rotabattle is continuing on this year, with three teams this time around. We wish Purple Pegasus, The Navy Seals & Mighty Morphing Flower Arrangers the best of luck in the various challenges and tasks that will no doubt be sent your way! Sara, our club service director, has also launched ‘The Mole’ in conjunction with our Rotabattle competitions. One member has been given this secret task with the aim in gaining extra points for their team.. but it will not always be an easy job. We’ve been told that sabotage and sneaking around is to be expected! This month we have also seen the launch of Fellowship Friday. Fortnightly, our club has decided to meet in an informal way for after work drinks on a Friday, in hope of letting off steam from the week just been and also granting further opportunities for members to build relationships and get to know each other in a relaxed setting. The first Friday Fellowship at Alchemy was a huge success (see our members Re and Cas enjoying a drink in the picture attached), and we’re looking forward to the next session on Friday the 27th of July at Sporties Hotel. Please feel free to join us! |
